My research essay will consider the role of science in providing insight to social problems. One topic I am interested in is Human Embryo and Fetal Research because there is much political controversy and medical support for this subject. The medical world has long been interested in human embryo and fetal research because it is believed to advance modern science and is develop lifesaving treatments and therapy. From a political standpoint though, the government connects embryo and fetal research to abortion. Another topic I am interested in is the religion vs. medical controversy that control organ donation. To the medical world, organ donation is viewed as beautiful charity. For example, if someone died in a car accident, their eyes can be donated to a blind woman that has never seen her children before. Most religions prohibit and frown upon organ donation because it is believed that the body should go back into the earth(burial) the way it came into this world; complete. There is controversy because some feel that once a body is no longer living, there is no use for organs and they will disintegrate. The ethics of children used as research subjects is intriguing as well. Some parents view it as a contribution to the medical and scientific world while others are offended at the thought of their children being “lab rats.” It is an argument of pure ethics and perspective.
