Susan Dominus uses a question to really force the reader to think about the situation of the twins. The simple question of “What pronoun captures that?” is a questions with a million possibilities but as of now, no real answer. Would you use “she” or would you use “they,” there are just so many ways that one could answer that question.
The author also shows that the twins skills may be lacking due to their conjoinment since “neither girl could draw the letter X,” however at the same time the author demonstrates that they make up for lacking in some areas by learning unique skills and abilities such as “grasping with toes,” that most kids their age would not be sufficient in at all. In reality these kids make up for their weaknesses with their unique strengths.
